In 1633, in the height of war, poverty and plagues, the villagers of the little town of Oberammergau in Bavaria, southern Germany, prayed and made a pact with God to perform the ‘Passion Play’ every ten years if he spared them and their families from the poverty and plagues and ended the war. Their prayers were answered and the first Oberammergau Passion Play was performed in 1634.  Ever since, their descendants have carried out that pledge and for the past four centuries the tradition has continued, every ten years.  Only villagers born in Oberammergau or those who have lived there for 20 years are allowed to take part in the play.  They devote a year of their lives to re-enacting the life, death and the resurrection of our Lord.>

In 2010, over 2000 villagers partook in the play and brought the story of Jesus of Nazareth to life for audiences that flock from around the world.  The play was performed on an impressive open-air stage and lasted five , with a three hour interval for dinner.

Oberammergau – an unsurpassed journey that every Christian should experience.
